Bontoc, Mountain Province \u2014 The Mayaen Sports Complex was filled with vibrant culture and profound discussions today as the Indigenous Peoples Student Summit 2024 took center stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the theme \u201cMga Katutubo at Katutubong Dunong: Pahalagahan, Pangalagaan, at Parangalan\u201d (Indigenous People and Indigenous Knowledge: <\/a>Value, Protect, and Honor), the event gathered students, instructors, and community leaders to celebrate and promote the rich legacy of indigenous knowledge and heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The program commenced with a research presentation titled The Tayan of Upland Bontoc by Mrs. Elizabeth P. Lacaben, setting the tone for a day dedicated to cultural appreciation and understanding. Following this, cultural performances by Philippine Indigenous Culture (PIC) classes, led by instructors Mrs. Suzelle Wangwang and Ms. Nova Lahi-an, showcased the traditions and artistry of the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Highlights included PIC Class E50\u2019s reenactment of the Sipat peace accord, a traditional peace-building ceremony; PIC Class F28\u2019s soulful rendition of the Salidumay song; and PIC Class E68\u2019s medley of song and dance celebrating the diversity of Mountain Province. In addition, PIC Class F8 brought the Sogaypan folklore to life with a spirited reenactment, while PIC Class E184 concluded with a traditional courtship dance, sharing ancestral courtship practices with the audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Atty. Brian Donggayao, NCIP Legal Officer of Mountain Province, delivered a keynote lecture emphasizing the importance of preserving indigenous rights and knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The program concluded with a community dance, where participants joined in harmony to the beat of the gongs, symbolizing unity and shared heritage. In his closing remarks, Dr. Ariel B. Sia-ed, Campus Director of MPSU-Bontoc, thanked all attendees and urged them to continue championing indigenous culture and identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
