MPSU and Western Red Berry Pickers Association Partner for Climate Action through Coffee Tree Planting and Environmental Education

In its continuing commitment to climate resilience and environmental stewardship, the Mountain Province State University (MPSU), through its Baang Campus, partnered with its coffee cooperative and NGO collaborator, the Western Red Berry Pickers Association (WRBPA), to conduct a Coffee Tree Planting and Environmental Information Drive in Baang, Bauko, Mountain Province.

This joint initiative directly supports SDG 13: Climate Action, emphasizing the integration of environmental education and NGO collaboration in promoting climate adaptation and mitigation in upland communities.

Participants from MPSU and WRBPA took part in coffee tree planting activities across identified areas in Baang. The effort highlighted the dual purpose of environmental rehabilitation and livelihood development, as coffee trees help sequester carbon, stabilize soils, and enhance watershed protection, while supporting the long-term sustainability of local coffee production.

The planting was complemented by on-site environmental information drives, which featured discussions on the role of tree planting and vegetation cover in mitigating climate change and reducing flood and erosion risks; sustainable and climate-resilient coffee production practices for highland ecosystems; and the importance of community partnerships in achieving shared climate goals.

The Western Red Berry Pickers Association, as MPSUโ€™s long-standing partner coffee cooperative, plays a vital role in bridging the Universityโ€™s academic expertise with grassroots experience. The organization has been instrumental in mobilizing local farmers, promoting sustainable coffee-based reforestation, and enhancing community awareness on climate adaptation.

Through this collaboration, MPSU continues to demonstrate how universities and local organizations can work together to translate environmental education into meaningful climate action. The initiative serves as a model for community-based adaptation, linking science, education, and sustainable enterprise. This partnership reinforces MPSUโ€™s mission to integrate climate-smart agriculture, environmental education, and research-driven extension into community transformation efforts.
