Celebrating Diversity Through Cultural Showdown

The Mountain Province State Polytechnic College, in a collaborative effort between the Gender and Development Unit and the Social Science Society, organized a Cultural Showdown on April 19, 2024, at the Eyeb Gymnasium in Poblacion, Bontoc. This event showcased cultural performances from the six municipalities of the province, underscoring the theme “Unity in Diversity: Exploring Cultural Richness.” The Cultural Showdown was designed to highlight the importance of gender equality and inclusivity, especially for minority group members who participated in the activities. By providing a platform for individuals from diverse backgrounds to showcase their talents and cultural expressions, the event aimed to promote understanding and reduce inequality within the community.

Dr. Edgar G. Cue, the College President, emphasized culture’s significance in shaping indigenous communities’ identity and values. He stressed that by appreciating and celebrating participants’ cultural expressions, the community could coexist peacefully in harmony as one culture and one community.

Director Parline Angyap T. Ullalim of the Gender and Development Unit emphasized the crucial role of students in preserving cultural heritage, referring to them as the future custodians of their culture. She encouraged students to embrace their cultural legacy with pride and responsibility, highlighting the importance of gender equality and inclusivity in cultural celebrations as essential elements of promoting unity and reducing inequality within society.
