IP Student Summit 2024 Celebrates and Champions Indigenous Heritage Preservation

Bontoc, Mountain Province — The Mayaen Sports Complex was filled with vibrant culture and profound discussions today as the Indigenous Peoples Student Summit 2024 took center stage.

With the theme “Mga Katutubo at Katutubong Dunong: Pahalagahan, Pangalagaan, at Parangalan” (Indigenous People and Indigenous Knowledge: Value, Protect, and Honor), the event gathered students, instructors, and community leaders to celebrate and promote the rich legacy of indigenous knowledge and heritage.

The program commenced with a research presentation titled The Tayan of Upland Bontoc by Mrs. Elizabeth P. Lacaben, setting the tone for a day dedicated to cultural appreciation and understanding. Following this, cultural performances by Philippine Indigenous Culture (PIC) classes, led by instructors Mrs. Suzelle Wangwang and Ms. Nova Lahi-an, showcased the traditions and artistry of the region.

Highlights included PIC Class E50’s reenactment of the Sipat peace accord, a traditional peace-building ceremony; PIC Class F28’s soulful rendition of the Salidumay song; and PIC Class E68’s medley of song and dance celebrating the diversity of Mountain Province. In addition, PIC Class F8 brought the Sogaypan folklore to life with a spirited reenactment, while PIC Class E184 concluded with a traditional courtship dance, sharing ancestral courtship practices with the audience.

Atty. Brian Donggayao, NCIP Legal Officer of Mountain Province, delivered a keynote lecture emphasizing the importance of preserving indigenous rights and knowledge.

The program concluded with a community dance, where participants joined in harmony to the beat of the gongs, symbolizing unity and shared heritage. In his closing remarks, Dr. Ariel B. Sia-ed, Campus Director of MPSU-Bontoc, thanked all attendees and urged them to continue championing indigenous culture and identity.

The Indigenous Peoples Student Summit 2024 successfully nurtured pride and responsibility among Indigenous students, strengthening their commitment to protect and celebrate their unique cultural heritage.
