The second day of the 14th Regional Symposium and 7th Student Congress on RDE Highlights focused on the ongoing presentation and evaluation of research papers, covering Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources (AANR) and Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology (IEET) sectors. In addition to paper presentations, attendees explored poster displays on IEET and continued networking and information campaigns at the institutional booths.
In the Igorota Hall at the Northern Philippine Root Crops Research and Training Center (NPRCRTC), Ary A. Agnaya presented her research under the Student AANR Category, titled “Characterization, Species, Composition, and Population Density of Erect Bamboo Species at Banao, Natonin, Mountain Province, Philippines.” The study contributed valuable insights to conservation efforts and sustainable practices in the region by focusing on bamboo species in the area.
Meanwhile, in the Benguet State University (BSU) Gymnasium, several presentations were made under the Student IEET & Development Category. The research presented by Aian M. Banggollay, “Refashioning Second-Hand Apparel into Eco-Friendly Bags,” gained notable attention. The project, which transforms old clothing into sustainable bags, was well-received by the University of the PhilippinesโSocial Innovation Laboratory and Business Inclusion (UP SILBI), which offered to include it in their incubation program. Additionally, Nardaโs Handwoven Arts and Crafts approached Banggollay, seeing potential in expanding the idea into an entrepreneurial venture, further amplifying the projectโs significance.
Other notable presentations included “The Physical Properties of Environment-Friendly Eco-Bricks Made from Soft Drink Polymers,” by Ann M. Rafael, which focused on creating sustainable building materials from plastic waste products, and “Acceptability of a Developed Automotive Portable Tool Organizer,” by Steward B. Pacpac-o, which introduced a practical tool organizer for automotive use, aiming to improve functionality in vehicle maintenance.
Following the presentations, certificates of participation were awarded to all presenters in both the AANR and IEET categories, recognizing their contributions to regional research efforts.
A plenary session, led by Dr. Thelma D. Palaoag, Director of the University of the CordillerasโInnovation and Technology Transfer Office (UC-InTTO), emphasized the critical role of Research and Development (R&D). Dr. Palaoag discussed the various phases of R&D and highlighted the distinction between academic publication and technology transfer, underscoring the importance of applying research outcomes to real-world situations.
The day concluded with a closing program at the BSU gymnasium, where the best papers and posters were awarded, celebrating the participants’ innovation and achievements. DOST Assistant Regional Pepita S. Picpican closed the event with an inspirational message, encouraging participants to continue their journey in research and innovation.
